AUSTIN, Texas — August 7, 2026 — Whole Foods Market and the National Young Farmers Coalition have launched the Next Generation Farmer Fund, a national initiative expected to direct more than $1 million in grants and technical assistance to beginning farmers and farmers under 40 who are building environmentally sustainable agricultural businesses.

The program combines private-sector funding with the Coalition's experience supporting working farmers. Whole Foods Market is the founding financial partner and will match eligible contributions from food and agriculture companies dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. The match is intended to mobilize at least the same amount from other participants and create a fund exceeding $1 million.

Applications are scheduled to open in October 2026, and grant recipients are expected to be announced in early 2027. Individual awards will range from $10,000 to $50,000. The National Young Farmers Coalition will administer the program and coordinate technical assistance for recipients.

Capital for the practical needs of a farm business

Beginning farmers frequently enter agriculture without inherited land, equipment or established credit relationships. Their early investments can include irrigation, soil improvements, washing and packing facilities, cold storage, livestock infrastructure, machinery repairs and working capital for a growing season. These costs arrive before a new operation has built a long revenue history.

The fund is designed to give eligible farmers room to make investments that strengthen both commercial durability and environmental performance. Supported practices may include soil-health improvements, carbon sequestration, water-quality projects, biodiversity measures and supply-chain resilience. Applicants will be able to explain how a proposed investment fits the needs of their own farm rather than selecting a single standardized project.

Program structure

  • Funding target: more than $1 million in total resources for farmers.
  • Founding match: Whole Foods Market will match partner contributions up to $500,000.
  • Award size: grants are planned at $10,000 to $50,000 each.
  • Eligibility focus: beginning farmers and farmers under 40 using sustainable practices.
  • Schedule: applications open in October 2026, with awards announced in early 2027.
  • Administration: the National Young Farmers Coalition will manage the program and technical support.

The initiative builds on lessons from the Coalition's earlier Young Farmer Grant program. Feedback indicated that $5,000 microgrants were often too small for infrastructure or farm-practice changes with meaningful operating impact. The new award range is intended to support larger, clearly defined investments while keeping grants accessible to independent producers.

A food-industry partnership rather than a single-company grant

Whole Foods Market's match creates a mechanism for suppliers and other agricultural businesses to multiply their contributions. The first group of supporters includes farms, food manufacturers and consumer brands from different parts of the supply chain. Additional organizations can participate while the matching commitment remains available through November 30, 2026.

The retailer also plans a customer-facing contribution. During August, one percent of revenue from sales of its Berry Chantilly Cake will be directed to the fund. This adds a retail channel to the partner-contribution model without changing the Coalition's role in grant administration.

How success will be measured

The immediate milestone is whether industry partners use the full $500,000 match and lift the fund above its $1 million target. The longer test will be the quality and durability of the farm investments. Useful indicators include infrastructure completed, operating risks reduced, production capacity protected, water or soil outcomes improved and businesses able to continue serving their communities.

Technical assistance is an important part of that test. A grant can finance equipment or a field practice, but recipients may also need planning, vendor selection, project sequencing and measurement support. Pairing capital with relevant expertise can help a farm convert a one-time award into a lasting operating improvement.

Supporting the next generation of American agriculture

The Next Generation Farmer Fund responds to a farm economy in which land prices, production costs and climate-related disruption can make entry difficult. The two organizations are focusing on farmers who are already taking responsibility for land stewardship but need additional capital to build viable enterprises.

For Whole Foods Market, the program connects sustainability commitments with the producers on which food retail ultimately depends. For the National Young Farmers Coalition, it expands a direct-support model while preserving a broader focus on land access, policy and equitable resources. The joint structure is intended to invite the wider food industry into a shared investment rather than treating the future of farming as the responsibility of farmers alone.
